CHAPTER SIX

I wake up to light flickering across my face. I shift to avoid the direct light when my face encounters a hard object. I rub my nose and try to shift the other way only to be locked in place.

“Good morning!” Barrett’s smooth voice greets me.

How did I forget where I was? I peek up into his blue eyes. Crinkles at the corners reflect his mood and mimic mine. At no point have I been this happy. The memories from last night return, and I snuggle back into his side. “Morning. I didn’t mean to fall asleep”

“I stayed awake for the both of us.” He rolls me deeper into him and kisses the top of my head. “I would give up everything for one night with you.”

“Lucky for you, you won’t have to give up anything.” I trail my fingers over his ribs and he flinches, which makes me wonder if he is ticklish. I graze my fingers up and down the hard lines of his side and watch the goosebumps rise on his bare arms.

“That is not a game you will win,” he warns as deep laughter shakes me.

I take one more chance to get to him. I poke my finger under the soft part where his ribs meet his stomach. He grabs my hand and rolls over me, caging me underneath him. My heart pounds at his display of confidence as he leans in to kiss me gently.

Distantly, I hear voices echoing through our sanctuary.

Barrett freezes momentarily before bounding to his feet. “Stay here. I will see who is out there.”

The warm morning air does little to relieve the chill that passes through me. I rise and straighten the winkles from my dress as Barrett storms to the cave entrance, peering out into the sand-covered landscape.

When he continues to perch himself by the opening, I take the added time to fold the blankets and place them back on the earth-made shelf along the cave wall before I walk to Barrett’s side.

He puts his arm up and pushes me behind him. “I can only see a little color, but it looks like the Greenwood guards. They aren’t calling out for you or me, so I’m not sure what their intentions are.”

Barrett takes my hand and swings us wide around the opening, keeping us a safe distance from the light flowing inside.

“Are you able to see anything from this angle?” Nerves strike through me as I imagine all the horrible things the guards may do to us. They could throw our bodies out into the ocean without anyone realizing what happened. At least, I took the time last night to explain to Barrett everything happening.

“Their voices are getting more distinct, so I think we should head out the other entrance.” Barrett doesn’t wait for me to agree. He marches to the other entrance with me in tow. “It will take us the long way around back to the castle, and we will have to scale some of the small cliffs and rock formations, but it will be safer for you.
